The main entry point for most
visitors to Great Abaco and the
Loyalist Cays is Marsh Harbour International Airport, though other
airports are located at Treasure Cay and Walker's Cay, the latter
serving only the exclusive resort based there. Bahamasair (phone
242/377-5505) offers flights to Marsh Harbour from Nassau (three
daily), West Palm Beach (Fri-Mon & Wed) and Miami (Thurs-Sat), with
most flights continuing on to Treasure Cay airport as well. American
Eagle (phone 954/367-2231 or 1-800/433-7300) also has daily flights to
Marsh Harbour from Miami. As an alternative, two Nassau mail boats
make the journey to Great Abaco (one-way; US$30); contact the dock
master at Potter's Cay dock in Nassau (phone 242/393-1064) for
schedules and information.
The
tourist information office (phone 242/367-3067) for the Abacos can be
found in Marsh Harbour on Queen Elizabeth drive, in a small shopping
centre in the heart of town.
The Out Islands Tourist Board (phone
305/931-6612 or 1-800/688-4752) offers complete information and maps
about the island. |
The
car rental agencies located around Marsh Harbour have a very limited
selection, and reservations should be made well in advance. A&P Auto
Rentals (Don McKay Boulevard, phone 242/367-2655) and H&L Rentals (Shell
Station downtown, phone 242/367-2840) both offer subcompacts and midsize
vehicles. Nearly every ho phone and resort rents bicycles, motorcycles and
motor scooters, with many visitors choosing motor scooters for day
trips to the southern Abacos.
