Located only 35 miles south of Marsh Harbour on the Great Abaco Highway, Abaco National Park comprises 2500 acres reserved to protect the Bahama parrot, which nests in holes in the island's limestone surface. vivid with bright green, red, white and blue colors, the parrots are known as "rainbows in the sky" to local residents. As an endangered species, they are found only on Abaco and Great Inagua, and the campaign to preserve their habitat as a national park was a notable success for ecological conservation.

Heavily forested, Abaco is the best island for bird watching in the Bahamas, and in the park you can expect to see warblers, West Indian woodpeckers, yellowthroats, flycatchers, swallows and Cuban Emeralds. The park's 32 square miles feature hardwood forests, nature trails and

wild Atlantic coast scenery, and notable fauna include butterflies, egrets, herons, spoonbills and rare hummingbirds, which inhabit a landscape filled with bromeliads and orchids. Day trips can be arranged at travel agencies and resorts in Marsh Harbour.
