The
most prominent activity on North Andros, and
the major draw for many of the island's visitors, is the sport of
bone fishing .
Although many of the creeks, flats, bights and rivers here sport
countless numbers of hungry bonefish, the North Bight is the focus
of the fishing scene, about thirty miles from Andros Town airport.
You
can always find a great assortment of fishing boats parked at the
wharf at nearby Nicholl's Town , a small burg of six hundred
residents living in breeze-block and tin-roofed homes and scattered
wooden shacks, lying near the island's north tip along a beach
fringed by tall palm trees. To the east lies the pleasant fishing
village of Lowe Sound , which has a guesthouse for visitors, several
small bars and restaurants, and a few recommended bone fishing guides
like Arthur Russell (phone 242/329-7372).
Less
appealing, the town of San Andros , further south along the east
coast, consists of a few concrete houses surrounded by pine forest,
with a nearby harbor at Mastic Point . Both settlements are tiny and
virtually without services. On the island's rugged west coast, the
tiny fishing village of Red Bays is the only real settlement,
reachable by a bumpy, unpaved fifteen-mile road from San Andros.

South of San Andros airport, the delightful Small Hope Bay Lodge is
the island's premier diving and fishing destination, while two miles
south of Small Hope Bay is Fresh Creek , which actually encompasses
two distinct settlements connected by a lovely single-lane bridge.
The first, Coakley Town , is home to a few shops, restaurants and
bars, as well as a large lighthouse on a cape. The town also has the
only full-service marina around, the Andros Lighthouse Yacht Club
and Marina, though the Chickcharnie Hotel offers slips as well.
Across the bridge, Andros Town has a tourist office, a pleasant park
with a few disused tennis courts, and the Androsia Batik Factory
(Mon-Sat 8am-5pm; phone 242/352-2255), one of the few commercial
enterprises on Andros. Operated by the Birch family, which also owns
Small Hope Bay Lodge , the factory produces colorful batiks, which
make fashionable dresses, blouses, pants, T-shirts and scarves, as
well as excellent wall hangings.

The
rough road south from Fresh Creek to Cargill Creek runs through bush
and pine scrub, and is devoid of settlements. Still, the towns of
Cargill Creek and nearby Behring Point are in the midst of prime
bone fishing country, and worth making the effort to visit if you
don't mind the drive.
