To the west of St John's the highway leads out through a narrow isthmus
onto the large Fie Islands peninsula, named for fie small rocks
that jut from the sea just offshore. There are several ho phone s on the
peninsula's northern coast, a few more on its west coast, though the
interior is largely barren and scrubby, and there's not a huge amount to
see. A half-mile offshore from
Hawksbill Bay, a large rock in the shape of the head of a hawksbill turtle gives the
place its name. To reach the bay, and some excellent beaches, follow the
main road straight through the peninsula.
