A world away from the up-tempo lifestyle and
commercialism of a place like Nassau, Cat Island and San
Salvador
offer an
isolated example of Bahamian life before the advent of modern
tourism. Still retaining the traditional farming and agriculture of
the old Bahamas, the islands have nonetheless experienced economic
difficulties in recent years, with their young workers leaving for
service jobs in New Providence and Grand Bahama and the population
shrinking to new lows in the last few decades. Nevertheless, they
both have considerable attractions for visitors, from splendid
stretches of pink sand beaches , to exquisite snorkeling and diving,
to intimate and comfortable lodges far from the bustle of more
populated islands.
Arrival and information
During holiday seasons or Junkanoo, flights to the islands are hard to
get, so try to reserve early. Bahamasair departs for Arthur's Town
airport from Nassau on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays (one-way fare
US$70; phone 242/377-5505 or 1-800/222-4262 in the US), and leaves for New
Bight airport on Mondays and Fridays. Air Sunshine (phone 1-800/327-8900)
and Island Express (phone 954/359-0380), both in Fort Lauderdale, also
serve New Bight. In the south, Hawk's Nest Resort (phone 242/342-7050 or
1-800/688-4752) has a private airstrip, though pilots must clear customs
first in New Bight, along with a marina for arriving yachts. Fernandez
Bay Marina is a good alternate choice.

Salvador, but excellent material is available through Nassau's Ministry
