Mate and Jenny's phone 242/332-1504. Just off the highway in South Palmetto, with a dark and cozy interior, rafters strung with yachting pennants and a pool table. Offers delicious conch pizza, seafood, steak, sandwiches and potent tropical cocktails. Closed Tuesdays.

Pammy's Queen's Highway, Governor's Harbour. A popular local spot with fine, home-style Bahamian food like fried chicken, conch fritters, burgers and sandwiches, with traditional side dishes like coleslaw, fried plantains, peas 'n' rice and macaroni and cheese.

 


 Rainbow Inn phone 242/335-0294. Atmospheric, hexagonal resort restaurant, among the nicest on the island, with excellent American-style seafood and sublime, home-made key lime pie. Dinner only; closed Sun-Mon.
