In the middle of Eleuthera, the genteel community of Governor's
Harbour is one of the earliest settlements in the Bahamas. To the
north, the Hatchet Bay Cave is a good spot for amateur explorers,
while beyond that, Gregory Town, built on a steep hillside
surrounding a deep horseshoe-shaped harbour, is the self-proclaimed
pineapple capital of the Bahamas. To the south of Governor's Harbour
are the picturesque fishing villages of Tarpum Bay and Rock Sound .
Outside of a handful of comfortable resorts, there are few organized
tourist facilities on Eleuthera, which is part of its appeal for many
visitors - that and the many empty beaches fit for swimming, strolling,
snorkeling, shell-collecting or sunbathing.
By comparison,
attractive Harbour Island - or Briland, as it also known locally -
bustles with activity, highlighted by the historic burg of Dunmore Town, which boasts several luxury resorts,
restaurants, bars, die outfitters and the stunning, three-mile Pink
Sand Beach .
