On
the north side of the Careenage is the tiny National Heroes
Square, formerly known for over a century as Trafalgar Square.
In 1999 the square was renamed, though at present a bronze statue of
the British Admiral Horatio Nelson, surrounded by the whirlwind of
Bridgetown traffic, still stands.
About 200m east of the square and parliament buildings, along St
Michael's Row, the large, red-roofed St Michael's Cathedral
(daily 9am-4pm; free) is the country's principal Anglican place of
worship. A stone church was first erected here in 1665, although the
present building mostly dates from 1786. It's a spacious, airy
place, with a large barrel roof, and incorporates some fine mahogany
carving in the pulpit and choir.

The cathedral's sprawling churchyard is the resting place for many
of the island's most prominent figures, including Sir Grantley Adams
and his son Tom.
