Much of central Bridgetown is given over to shopping, with dozens of
duty-free stores competing for the cruise-ship dollar. The main drag
is Broad Street, which runs northwest from National Heroes
Square. This has been the city's market centre since the
mid-seventeenth century, and still retains some splendid colonial
buildings amid the modern chaos of clothes and jewelry shops,
fast-food joints and fruit vendors. It's worth a stroll, even if
you're not planning to shop.
Beyond St Mary's Church, Broad Street runs into Cheapside,
where you'll find the station for buses and minibuses heading north,
as well as the GPO and one of the city's larger public
markets . On your left, Temple Street runs down to the
waterfront past a row of wooden stalls that mark the edge of
Temple Yard , where many of the city's Rastas have set up small
businesses selling sandals and other handcrafted leather goods, as
well as their distinctive red, gold and green jewelry and
headgear.

At
the bottom end of Temple Yard, the main artery running east-west is
the Princess Alice Highway. Five minutes' walk along the highway to
the west, the Pelican Craft Centre is an excellent shopping
complex built on reclaimed land, with a small art gallery, a dozen
or so stores selling batiks, T-shirts, paintings and other
souvenirs, and a couple of snack bars.
