Signposted on your right as you head up the east coast, Skeete Bay
and Consett Bay are a couple of quiet, pretty coves, each with a
strip of sand backed by palm trees and with fishing boats pulled up
on the beach as they have been for centuries. Just north of Consett
Bay, on the cliff top, stand the handsome buildings of Codrington
College (daily 10am-4pm; B$5). The first degree-level
institution in the English-speaking West Indies, it continues to
teach theology to budding Anglican vicars, and is now affiliated to
the University of the West Indies. |
The approach to the college is dramatic, along a long avenue lined
on either side with a graceful row of tall cabbage palms and ending
beside a large ornamental lake covered in water lilies. The
buildings are arranged around an unfinished quadrangle, with an
arched central portico that opens onto large, elegant gardens
offering panoramic views over the coast.
