You'll find the widest variety of places to eat on the south coast, particularly at the crowded St Lawrence Gap, where street vendors flogging jerk chicken jostle with punters heading for the classy oceanfront restaurants.

St Lawrence Gap is also the heart of south coast nightlife , with plenty of options, whether you want to see a band or hit the dance floor.

Rockley and Worthing
Bubba's Sports Bar
Across from the Accra Beach Hotel tel 246/435-6217. The food is secondary to the entertainment here, with large and small TV screens dotted around the place showing sport from around the world, but burgers, chicken and sandwiches are decent and well priced. Daily10am-10pm. Carib Beach Bar next to the Crystal Waters guesthouse. A lively place for a drink, especially during happy hour from 5pm to 6pm, when you'll also get reasonably priced snacks including spicy chicken wings, shrimp kebabs and fish cakes. Daily 11.30am-10pm.

St Lawrence Gap and Dover
After Dark
St Lawrence Gap tel 246/435-6547. The late-night zone - a huge and cleverly laid-out place with a dark disco and a massive stage and dance floor out the back for the live bands who play a couple of times a week. The bar - nearly 30m long - claims to stock every liquor you can name, and the crowd is a good mix of Bajans and tourists, all dressed to the nines. Cover charge varies. 10pm-3am.

Bean & Bagel Dover tel 246/420-4604. Great coffee, all-day breakfasts of bagels, pancakes and omelettes, muffins and tasty lunch options (lasagne, crab backs and the like) have made this internet café something of an institution for those staying at the eastern end of the Gap. Daily 7am-5.30pm.

Café Sol St Lawrence Gap tel 246/435-9531. Lively, often crowded Mexican place doing a roaring trade in margaritas and Mexican beers, particularly during the 6-7pm and 10-11pm happy hours; decent and sensibly priced burritos, tacos and enchiladas are available. Daily 6-11pm.

Josef's St Lawrence Gap tel 246/435-6541. Both the food and the service at this elegant coral-stone restaurant are as good as you'll find on the south coast, with candelit tables both indoors and (more romantically) down by the water's edge. Starters run B$8-22 and include soups, char-grilled shrimp and beef carpaccio; main courses of blackened dolphin, roast chicken or rack of lamb start at B$35. Daily 6-10pm, Dec-April also noon-2pm.

Reggae Lounge St Lawrence Gap tel 246/435-6462. Intimate, unpretentious club with a small bar up top and steps down to the open-air dance floor under the palm trees. The DJs love to play the latest Jamaican dancehall, but you'll also get "oldies" nights - Bob Marley, Jimmy Cliff, Peter Tosh - and live bands several times a week, usually Thurs and Sun. Cover charge varies. 9pm-late.

Ship Inn St Lawrence Gap tel 246/435-6961. English pub in style, with several bars and a small, sweaty dance floor, with the most tourist-friendly bands - reggae meets rap meets Marvin Gaye. There's music every night around 10.30pm-12.30am and bands, and a big crowd, on Tues and Sat 9pm-1am.

Whistling Frog Sports Pub Dover tel 246/420-5021. Great new bar/bistro serving food all day, from a buffet breakfast to lunch and supper of pepperpot stew or seafood caesar salad (all around B$15), though many here simply hang out with a drink watching sport on the TVs. Daily 7am-very late.

Oistins
The Bay Garden Oistins Market. One of the most atmospheric places on the island, with a dozen stalls offering a variety of seafood from conch fritters to fried kingfish to dolphin. Prices are low: you'll be hard-pressed to pay more than B$12 a head, and if you go into the covered Fish Net area you'll find plenty of Bajans tucking into equally good barbecued fish straight off the grill. Daily 5.30-10pm.
