As you head across the parish boundary into St Joseph, the meticulously landscaped Flower Forest (daily 9am-5pm; B$13.80) is signposted just south of Highway 2. There is a great variety of indigenous and imported plants and trees here, all labeled with their Latin and English names and country of origin, and some fabulous views over the hills of the Scotland district, but overall the place feels just a little bit too neat and ordered.

If you only have time to visit one of the island's botanical gardens, you're probably better off making for the more rugged Andromeda Botanical Gardens on the east coast, but the Flower Forest is certainly worth a look if you're in the area.

The almost endless variety of trees include breadfruit, coffee, Barbados cherry, avocado and a single African baobab tree, and there is a fine collection of orchids, hibiscus and the "lobster claw" heliconias. Other highlights include Palm Walk, where dozens of different types of palm are scattered around.
