Three or four kilometers beyond the airport, Foul Bay is the
largest beach on this section of the coast. Access isn't signposted;
look out for the large Methodist Church beside the road in the small
village of Rice and a right turn 100m further on takes you right
down to the beach. It's a long, wide white-sand beach with a handful
of fishing boats normally pulled up on its eastern side and few
tourists (and no food and drink facilities). The long cliffs give
the place a rugged feel but it's not particularly pretty.
Back on the main road, the Crane Beach Hotel lies half a
kilometer beyond Foul Bay, commanding a superb site above Crane Bay.
A house was first erected here in 1790 and today forms the east
wing; during the 1880s the place was converted into a hotel, whose
early guests included "Wild Bill" Hickock.

More recently, developers have decided that a timeshare
development is the best way of reaping tourist dollars from
the site, and the hotel is now backed by a couple of large
and brightly colored apartment blocks. In spite of the
development it's a fetching place and worth a look even if
you're not staying. A long Roman-style swimming pool runs
alongside the main hotel building at the top of the cliff
and, beside the panoramic restaurant, two hundred steps lead
down to a pretty beach.
