Gun Hill Signal Station
(Mon-Sat 9am-5pm; B$9.20) sits among pretty landscaped gardens that
belie its turbulent origins.
Built in 1818 and restored by the Barbados National Trust, the
watchtower offers fabulous panoramic views across the green, gently
rolling hills of central Barbados and out to the ocean beyond
Bridgetown.
Guides give an expert introduction to the local history, and there
is a small but immaculate display of military memorabilia, including
flags of the various army regiments that were stationed here, maps
of the island's many forts - 23 of them had been built as early as
1728 - and the cannons (never fired) that would have alerted the
population to enemy invasion.
|
Below the station, and visible from the tower, is a giant
white lion - a British military emblem carved from a
single block of limestone by soldiers stationed here in
1868.
