The Mount Gay Rum Factory , a five-minute drive north of town
on the Spring Garden Highway (Mon-Fri 9am-4pm, 45min tours every
half-hour; B$10; phone 246/425-8757), offers marginally the better
of the rum tours.
The tour starts with a short film giving the history of the company,
Mount Gay Rum Factory, which first distilled rum on the island in
1703 and is reckoned to be the world's oldest surviving producer of
the spirit.
The tour covers all stages of production, including refining,
ageing, blending and bottling. Afterwards, head to the bar, where
the bartender demonstrates how to be a rum-taster, and you're given
a complimentary cocktail.
