There is little sign of the hotel extravaganza to come as Highway 1
begins to carve its way up the west coast through the tiny village
of Prospect.
Most of the area here is residential and the
beaches - largely bereft of tourists - are popular at weekends and
holidays with families up from Bridgetown. A good bet, if you want
to swim, is Prospect Beach - a narrow crescent of sand,
backed by manchineel trees and palms, and a calm turquoise bay.
Public access is via a path just north of the all-inclusive
Escape Hotel , and at busy times the beach can get crowded with
the hotel's guests.

Continuing north, there isn't much to distinguish this area of coast
other than a series of superlative bays and beaches, many of them
tucked away behind an increasingly grand row of hotels and private
mansions, themselves often hidden by security fences. A right turn
opposite the Tamarind Cove Hotel winds upward into the
island's interior, past the grand polo field at Holder's House
- an old Great House and the venue for a prestigious classical music
festival every March. |
