One very popular sport in Rio is Beach Volleyball. There are hundreds poles embedded in the beach sand that are used for the beach volleyball nets. The nets are also used for another popular Rio sport called foot volley, where only the feet are used to play the game.

Both
Ipanema and Copacabana beach have official beach volleyball competitions. Brazil has a long standing custom in the sport, and have returned to Brazil with several medals.  Famous Olympic gold medal players like Sandra and Jackie Silva; who earned their gold medals in the Atlanta Olympics, are often seen training in Ipanema and Leblon.

Beach volleyball lessons are offered at several Ipanema Beach schools. Morning classes end around 11 or noon after the sun gets too hot, then classes resume in the afternoon. Just ask the locals to join in the fun; you’ll be glad you did.
