For anyone who has never dived in the tropics before, the reefs near San Pedro are fine, but more experienced divers may be disappointed. This is a heavily used area which has long been subject to intensive fishing, and much of the reef has been plundered by souvenir hunters. To experience the best diving in Belize, you need to take a trip out to one of the atolls .

Open water certification , which takes novices up to the standard of a qualified sport diver, costs around US$350, while a more basic resort course is US$125. For qualified divers a two-tank dive costs around US$50, including tanks, weights, air and boat. One of the best local operators is Amigos Del Mar, just north of the centre (phone226-2706)

A live-aboard dive boat, the Offshore Express (phone226-2817), allows you visit the outer atolls, including the Blue Hole and Half Moon Caye.

A typical two-day trip costs around US$250, including meals and five dives; you can be picked up from Caye Caulker at no extra cost, though you'll usually need to reserve in advance. To book the best dive operators or dive boats contact the Blue Hole Dive Center, on Front Street, near the Spindrift Hotel (phone& fax 226-2982), which has details of all local operators and dive boats. The best dive shops in San Pedro recommend you make a voluntary contribution of US$1 per tank to help fund the town's hyperbaric chamber.
