Cuello
lies about 5km west of Orange Walk. Discovered in 1973 by Norman
Hammond, until recently the site was thought to be one of the
earliest in the Maya region, originating in 1500 BC. However, new
research suggests that it in fact dates back only to 1000 BC.
The site itself isn't very impressive, with little to see except a
single small pyramid and several earth-covered mounds. The ruins are
behind a factory where Cuello rum is made; the site is on their
land, so you should call beforehand for permission to visit (phone:
322-2141). Taxis here from Orange Walk cost around US$10.
