Situated on the Orange Walk-Corozal district boundary, Nohmul
(Great Mound) is a major ceremonial centre with origins in the
Middle Pre-Classic period, between 900 and 400 BC.
Nohmul was subsequently abandoned during the Classic period, but
reoccupied during the Early Post-Classic. The ruins cover a large
area, comprising two groups connected by a causeway, with several
plazas around them.
The main structure is an acropolis platform surmounted by a later
pyramid: the highest point in the area.

Nohmul lies amid sugar-cane fields, 2km west of the village of
San Pablo , which is 17km north of Orange Walk on the Northern
Highway. You'll need to get permission to enter the site from the
landowner, Estevan Itzab, who lives on the west side of the highway,
directly opposite the village water tower.
