Getting to Lamanai
from Orange Walk is relatively straightforward. Three buses a
week (Mon, Wed & Fri, returning Mon, Wed & Fri; 2hr) leave at 4pm
from the side of the fire station, in the centre of town, for the
village of Indian Church; the late-afternoon departure time
means you'll have to stay at least overnight. The most pleasant way
to get here, though, is by river, and a number of operators now
organize day-trips for US$30-50 per person. By far the most
informative are those operated by Jungle River Tours, run by the
knowledgeable Antonio and Herminio Novelo and based at the
Lover's Restaurant in Orange Walk (phone 322-2293). On the way
they'll point out lurking crocodiles and the dozens of species of
birds, including snail kites that you might otherwise miss.

If
you want to stay (and you'll have to if you're traveling by
bus) there are a couple of places offering rooms (US$15-25)
in Indian Church, though they're rather overpriced. Speak to Nazario
at the site and he'll let you camp at his house or rent you a
hammock very cheaply; you can eat with his family. More up market
accommodation is available nearby in the thatched cabaņas at
Lamanai Outpost Lodge (phone 223-3578;
US$80-100), set in extensive gardens sweeping down to the lagoon.
