Most visitors fly to Bonaire's Flamingo International Airport, located 5km south of Kralendijk. The easiest way to reach the capital or your hotel is to take a taxi from outside the terminal; expect to pay around US$8-12.

Several cruise ships also visit the island twice a week and usually spend most of the day in port, just long enough for passengers to take in some sightseeing and shopping.

It is also possible to take a ferry to and from Curaçao. The Flamingo Fast Ferry departs from the North Pier in Kralendijk twice daily at 6.30am and 3.30pm (US$55 round-trip; 1hr 30min each way; Phone 599/717-7001).

Tickets can be purchased by the pier or directly from the captain on board, and passengers are advised to arrive at least a half-hour before departure.

If you're planning to dive or wish to explore the interior, you'll be better off renting a car from the airport or your hotel. A pleasant alternative is seeing the island's unspoiled beauty by scooter.
