Bonaire's oldest settlement, Rincon, is nestled in a
valley northwest of Kralendijk - a cluster of red-roofed
houses, a gas station and one phone booth shared by all of
its residents.
Originally established as a Spanish settlement in the
sixteenth century, Rincon eventually became home to many
slave families who labored in the nearby plantations and
salt fields of the southern peninsula.
The town is best visited during the annual Rincon Day
festival (April 30), when visitors from all over the
Caribbean come here for traditional music and dancing, and
local food such as goat stew served with funchi .
|
During the rest of the year Rincon is worth seeking out for
its laid-back atmosphere and rural setting; before leaving
be sure to stop at popular Prisca's Ice Cream on Kaya
Komkomber for a taste of her famous concoctions.
