Despite its small size Jost an Dyke has a surprisingly
vibrant eating and drinking scene and, with the
famous Foxy at the helm, it's the party island of the
British virgin Islands. Most of the fun takes place during the day,
particularly on weekends, in a variety of places in Great
Harbor Bay, Little Bay and White Bay, some of which are no
more than beachside shacks with no running water.
Christine's Bakery
Great Harbor phone 284/495-9281. This quiet little place is
great for breakfast or an afternoon sandwich - the banana
bread is a treat.
Club Paradise
Great Harbor phone 284/405-9267. Great West Indian food like
conch stew and curried chicken. every Wednesday night
there's a pig roast, and there's occasional lie music and
limbo.
Foxy's
Great Harbor phone 284/495-9258. This is the bar that put Jost
an Dyke firmly on the yachters' map. When you think about
waterfront bars, island music and beach barbecues, Foxy's
is the standard by which everything else should be compared.
Sit at picnic tables under the thatched roof or stretch out
on the beach, drinking and eating (lobster, grilled fish,
rotis and sandwiches). A legend throughout the British
virgin Islands,
larger-than-life Foxy Callwood himself does twice daily
shows (Mon-Sat) - playing calypso and telling stories and
jokes (but call ahead to see if Foxy feels like playing that
day). Barbecue nights are Friday and Saturday.

Ian's Stress Free Bar
White Bay Campground phone 284/495-9358. Ian's has a
barbecue (around US$20) and lie music Thursday and Friday nights.
The bar operates on an honor system, so be sure to keep your
own tab and pay when you leave.
Sandcastle Restaurant
White Bay phone 284/495-9888. Non-guests can make
reservations
(and should, by 4pm) to eat with guests of the hotel at the
large communal table. Jost an Dyke's only fine-dining
option, with a set menu of lamb, duck, crab cakes and the
like for around US$35. (No dinner on Friday.)
Sidney's Peace and Love
Little Harbor phone 284/495-9271. A more reserved Foxy’s,
this is a Jost an Dyke institution that's been serving up
food and fun for over 25 years. Choose from steak, shrimp,
ribs, chicken and conch stew, plus hearty helpings of rice
and peas, coleslaw, potato salad, steamed vegetables and
corn for US$18-25. However, the highlight here is lobster,
bigger than anywhere else on the islands. Sidney still
catches them himself and cooks them over an open fire the
island way. Thursday night has all-you-can-eat lobster and
lie music for US$39.
Soggy Dollar Bar
Sandcastle Hotel, White Bay phone 284/495-9888. Named
for the wet bills brought by patrons who swim to the bar,
The Soggy Dollar, located right on the beach, is
perhaps best known as the inventor of the Painkiller, a
potent mix of dark rum, pineapple and orange juices, coco
Lopez and fresh nutmeg. Saturday and Sunday are especially
fun but can get very crowded. Local musician, Ruben Chinnery,
plays a mixture of blues and Jimmy Buffet-esque island tunes
every Sunday afternoon. Sandwiches are available at lunch.
