Tortola
("land of turtle doves" in Spanish), with a population of
around 15,000, is the commercial and cosmopolitan centre of
the British Virgin Islands. Also the largest of the British
Virgin Islands, Tortola's twenty
square miles of stunning mountain scenery rise to a peak of
1780ft, the highest in the British Virgin Islands, at Sage Mountain on
the west of the island. Road Town, roughly halfway
along the more developed southern coast of the island, is
home to the governor's residence, and most of Tortola's few
historic sights. The west of the island, especially the
north coast, has some of the best beaches and resorts
and the liveliest nightlife - the eastern end is less
well established on the tourist track but has some fine,
often deserted beaches, including the island's best beach
for surfing.

The island is best explored by car; Ridge Road,
running east-west along the mountains' backbone, offers
stunning views across the Francis Drake Channel. It gives
access to the Belle View Overlook, Mount Healthy National
Park , the touristy restaurant/bar Skyworld ,
which offers the island's only 360-degree view, and Sage
Mountain National Park (just off Ridge Road).
