Forest covers about 27% of the land area in the country. According to Canada's National Forestry Database, about 9.6 million hectares (23.7 million acres) of the public forestlands are for uses other than timber production, including parks, game refuges, water conservation areas, and nature preserves.

In 2001, an estimated 198.3 million cubic meters (7 billion cubic feet) of round-wood was harvested. Canada ranks as the third-largest producer of coniferous wood products (after the United States and Russia) and is the leading supplier of soft wood products to world markets.

Chief forest products in eastern Canada are pulp and paper manufactures, especially newsprint. Canada leads the world in newsprint production, with 9.2 million tons in 2000, accounting for 24% of the world's production. Exports of newsprint were valued at over C$4.7 billion, with about three-fourths going to the United States.
