The main roads around Grand Cayman were paved in the late 1990s and are in good condition. You might find it easiest to rent a car to get around on them, though the public bus service is efficient, and taxis are relatively comfortable, with fixed rates that aren't too astronomical.

By Taxi
Taxis
are available from the airport, all resorts and from the taxi stand at the cruise ship dock in George Town. Rates are fixed and posted at the downtown dock and at the dispatch stand at the airport. Cabbies rarely try to rip off visitors. Rates from the airport to the Seven Mile Beach resorts run about US$35 one-way.

By Car
Rentals
are available across the street from the airport and at some hotels. Most agencies provide complimentary pick-up/drop-off. All the major US rental companies operate here - Avis, Budget, and Hertz - though Coconut Car rentals (phone 345/949-4377), an island-based company, is often a few dollars a day cheaper than the others. Economy-size car rentals start at US$25 per day.

By Bus
The bus terminal is adjacent the public library on Edward Street in downtown George Town and serves as the dispatch point for all buses. The white and beige minibuses serve as the fleet and are distinguished by the large round color-coded stickers initialed with the routes they cover.

All districts are served by bus, though depending on where you want to go you may have to transfer. Rides cost CI$1.50-2. Because of all the stops they make, it will take longer as compared to driving your own car but you'll certainly get a dose of local culture by listening in on the conversations or joining in one yourself. Daily bus service generally begins at 6am and runs until midnight. If you're planning on using bus service past 10pm its best to make sure your route will be served; sometimes the bus service stops early.
