Winter is still the busiest time in Summit County. Breckenridge
Ski Area, the oldest of the four top-class resorts, spans four
peaks and offers ideal terrain for all skiers - and snowboarders,
with a six-acre park with half-pipe - as does the plush Keystone
Resort, where the biggest night-ski operation in the US permits
skiing until 10pm. The smallest resort in the county, Arapahoe
Basin (generally known as "A-Basin"), offers great
above-tree
line bowl skiing. All three are owned by the same company and
covered by one lift ticket ($47 per day), making this one of the
best-value deals in the country. The slopes at the other ski area,
the ingenious Copper Mountain ($45 for one day), are divided
into three clear sections to keep beginners, intermediates and
experts out of each other's way. You can find out about conditions
by calling phone970/453-6118.
In
summer, mountain-bikers and road racers alike will be happy with the
opportunities for cycling, particularly the stretch between
Frisco and Breckenridge; Racer's Edge at 114 N Main in Breckenridge
(phone970/453-0995) rents out the best bikes.

Each resort runs chair-lift or gondola rides to the top of the mountains,
which, as well as stunning views, provide access to great hiking
and cycling trails. Breckenridge also offers toboggan rides down the
dry Superslide (summer daily 9am-5pm; $8), mini-golf ($6) and
a giant maze ($4).
