Whatever you think of
George Carlin, there's no question that he is a comedic icon. Since
starting in the business as the ~Hippy Dippy Weatherman~ on
"Laugh-In," Carlin has found continued success on tour and on
television. His long-lied career seems due in large part to his
chameleonic adaptability. That he has been around for about 40 years
certainly shows that he has been well able to weather the changes
that have occurred along the way.
One striking characteristic is Carlin's direct brand of humor. His
comedy is no-holds-barred and goes right for the jugular. He does not
hold back, addressing a wide
range of issues from religion to politics, from travel to crime. He
speaks his mind without apologies. given his in-your-face style,
it's perhaps inevitable that audience members will occasionally walk
out halfway
through one of his shows. What's surprising is that anyone familiar
with Carlin would not know what he or she was getting himself into.
A true activist, Carlin created ~NIMBY~ (Not in My Back Yard!) and
has consistently made known his feelings
about the country's political state of affairs. He is vocal about
his misgivings, both on stage and off. But that does not mean he is
not a true performer. He simply has the gift of imbuing a wide range
of issues with humor and using his comedic gifts to bring difficult
topics
into the public arena and putting them out there for discussion. He
is no mere rabble-rouser but sincerely desires a better society; his
means of challenging authority
is how he sees fit to bring about change. He is not just a comic but
is also a man with a revolutionary plan.
Included among the numerous awards that George has won over the
years are the Grammy, Cable Ace, Lifetime Achievement Award and Free
Speech Award. In addition, he has his own
star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and has received numerous Emmy
nominations for his work. As if that isn't
enough, he's enjoyed a successful writing career, with a number of
books on the bestsellers list.
As you can tell, there's much more to Carlin than his ~seven bad
words.~ He even receied 2 Emmy nominations for his
role of Mister Conductor on the PBS show "Shining Time Station."
