Dominican Republic - Boca Chica

Once one of the island's prime swimming spots, Boca Chica curves along a small protected bay, with transparent Caribbean water paralleling a long line of beach shacks. Sadly, the town has become so overwhelmed with tourism - and an accompanying plethora of shysters and informal "guides" - that it's no longer the best spot along the coast to spend some time, and a major draw these days is prostitution.

Sitting on the beach is the main daytime activity, and the waters are low and calm enough for a good swim. Expect a big crowd on weekends.

Eating and Drinking
There are several quality restaurants in Boca Chica, but the very best places to eat are the beachside food shacks serving fresh seafood. The bars are all along the main strip, Calle Duarte.

D'Lucien Duarte 69. Pricey patio restaurant with views of the promenade and fresh seafood displayed on ice.

Portofino Duarte 44. Beachfront pizzeria with great atmosphere.

Romagna Mia Duarte 74. Solid Italian fare in a pleasant little courtyard restaurant a block from the beach. The pastas are excellent, but you should treat yourself to the great fresh seafood.
