Stretched along the C-5 between the beach and lagoon that bear its name, Cabarete is a crowded international enclave that owes its existence almost entirely to windsurfing.

The main beach, Playa Cabarete, has ideal conditions for the sport, and the multicultural cross-section of its aficionados attracts a growing community from across the globe.

Arrival and Accommodation

Virtually all of Cabarete is on the Carretera 5. Buses, guaguas and motoconchos will all drop you off along the main strip, a crowded patchwork of restaurants and bars, tour operators and souvenir shops.

Bahía Arena
Carretera 5 phone   809/571-0370, fax 571-0523 . The best high-end value, especially if you're with a large group: a selection of individually designed condominiums right by a quieter stretch of beach with a pool and tennis court as well. US$75-100.

Banana Boat
Carretera 5 phone   & fax 809/571-0690. The oldest and best of the budget accommodations, located just off the Tricom plaza. Very busy, so book in advance. Up to US$25.

El Magnifico
Carretera 5 phone   & fax 809/571-0868. Three different buildings with eye-catching architecture and wild ethnic-style interiors set around a tranquil pool area. This place is a real haven yet it's just a five-minute stroll from the town centre. US$75-100.

Residencia Dominicana
Calle Las Orquideas phone   & fax 809/571-0890. Small hotel with good, clean rooms and a peaceful garden and pool. Located on the Orquideas road, south of the C-5, at the eastern end of town. The place usually fills up, so it's a good idea to reserve in advance. US$25-50.

Villa Taina
Carretera 5 phone   809/571-0722, fax 571-0883. Classy hotel with top-notch service and a selection of stunning individually designed rooms, some with sea views. US$75-100
