Most of the good south coast restaurants are concentrated around Nelson's Dockyard and nearby Falmouth Harbour. Two others to look out for are Alberto's - a fie-minute drive or taxi ride away-and the Lookout, high up on Shirley Heights.

Alberto's Willoughby Bay phone 268/460-3007. Probably the best food on the south coast, hosted by the eponymous long-time proprietor in an out-of-the-way spot. Recurring evening meals include thin slices of breadfruit roasted in a garlic and parsley sauce (EC$25) and pan-fried tuna or wahoo with wasabi and ginger (EC$60). Top desserts send you happily on your way. Tues-Sun dinner only; closed July-Oct.

HQ Nelson's Dockyard, English Harbour phone 268/562-2563. Excellent place in the heart of the dockyard serving imaginative Asian/Caribbean fusion food. Starters at US$7-10 include Thai squid salad and sashimi; main dishes of hot and sweet fish (US$17), chili lamb (US$23) or lobster that you choose from the tank (US$27). The similar lunch menu offers cheaper snacks. Daily for lunch and dinner.

Hype English Harbour phone 268/562-2354. Loud nightclub and bar on a pier over the water, with DJs during the week and bands at the weekends. Popular with both the sailing crowd and locals. Wed-Sun 7pm-1am. No cover charge.

The Last Lemming - Falmouth Harbour phone 268/460-6910. Tasty food at this frequently crowded harbour side spot, though the service can be dreadfully slow. Pan-fried catch of the day (US$12-16) and grilled steaks (US$15-22) are typical of the daily offerings. Daily for lunch and dinner.

The Lookout Shirley Heights phone 268/460-1785. The only place for a refreshment break while you're up on the Heights, offering up simple meals from US$5 on a large patio with superb views over the harbour and the dockyard (daily for lunch and dinner). The Sunday (and, to a lesser extent, Thursday) barbecues have a great party atmosphere, pulling a huge crowd for the reggae and steel-band performances (from 4pm, no cover charge).
