Grayton Beach Recreation Area
Behind the beach, high barrier dunes stabilized by sea oats and scrub overlook the clear green and azure waters where dolphins are sometimes seen. The appeal to swimmers is obvious

A superb, mile-long beach of brilliant white sand awaits for visitors to this interesting park. Behind the beach, high barrier dunes stabilized by sea oats and scrub overlook the clear green and azure waters where dolphins are sometimes seen. The appeal to swimmers is obvious.

Fishermen may surf cast, primarily for whiting and king mackerel. Western Lake, behind the dunes is popular for boat fishing; its brackish water supports both fresh and saltwater species. For those interesting in wildlife there are the 15-minute Pine Woods Loop and the 40-minute Barrier Dune Nature Trail. The latter provides markers keyed to entries in a trail guide booklet explaining the many phenomena of the shoreline ecosystem, such as shifting sands, dune building, plant pruning by wind and salt spray, and decomposition and recycling. Elsewhere in the park plaques identify and explain the significance of various plant species.

Raccoons and alligators are common sights throughout this 356-acre expanse of salt marshes, slash pines, and palmettos. In the summer loggerhead turtle nests may be found on the beach. The park has two sheltered picnic areas and a camp-ground. Although the sites are close together, dense scrub separated them and gives privacy. Open year-round. Admission charged Memorial Day – Labor Day. County Te. 30A, Grayton Beach.
