Getting around Andros
Renting a car can be a frustrating endeavor, and is typically best forsaken in lieu of
walking and bicycling as cheaper, easier alternatives

Located 25 miles west of New Providence, Andros is easily accessed by airplane or ferry from Nassau or mainland Florida. Bahamasair (phone 242/339-4415 or 1-800/222-4262 in the US) is the main carrier between Nassau's International Airport and any of the four airports on Andros. Some other, smaller carriers are Congo Air (phone 242/377-8329), Lynx Air International (phone 1-888/596-9247) and Major Air (phone 242/352-5778).

Ferries and mail boats are a cheap and easy way to reach Andros from Nassau. Ferries can make the 25-mile journey in just under three hours, although, depending on your destination and route, they may sometimes take up to seven hours. Fares are US$30 one-way. For ferry schedules and for information on accessing government mail boats, contact the dockmaster's office at Potter's Cay in Nassau (phone 242/393-1064).

Tourist information offices are located throughout the island, though the best site is at Fresh Creek (phone 242/368-2286), located opposite the city park on the south side of the creek. Other offices are at Mangrove Cay (phone 242/369-0544) and South Andros (phone 242/369-1688).

There are only a few good options for getting around the island, mainly because there are so few roads, and major settlements are widely separated. Renting a car can be a frustrating endeavor, and is typically best forsaken in lieu of walking and bicycling as cheaper, easier alternatives.

Taxis present another travel option, meeting all incoming flights at the airport, though cab companies on Andros are mainly individual operators who can vary dramatically in service and price. With no official tour operators on the island, most taxi drivers also double as tour guides , and offer informal sightseeing jaunts, particularly on North Andros, for around US$300 per day for two people. Some hotels and resorts may also include a complimentary taxi service for guests.
