Most
visitors rarely venture beyond the resorts of Freeport/Lucaya, where
the major attractions can easily be reached by foot, bicycle, motor
scooter, public bus or organized bus tours. Complimentary shuttle
buses to beaches, restaurants and the town centers of Freeport and
Lucaya are offered by most hotels, and dinner shuttles are also
available from some of the restaurants on the outskirts of town.
For
those who want to roam further, a variety of transport options are
available. Car rentals start from around US$80 a day plus gas, and
include companies like Avis at the airport (phone 242/352-7666) and Port
Lucaya (phone 242/373-1102), Brad's (phone 242/352 7930), Dollar-Rent-a-Car
(phone 242/352-9325), Hertz (phone 1-800/654-3131 from North America,
otherwise phone 242/352-3297), and Thrifty (phone 242/352-9308).
Bahama Buggies (phone 242/352-8750, buggies@batelnet.bs ) rents
bright-pink dune buggies for US$50 a day plus optional $15 insurance,
while motor scooters can be rented for US$50 per day in the parking lot
across from Reef Village in Port Lucaya, at Running Mon Resort
and Marina , at the Island Palm Resort , and can also be arranged
through your hotel. Well-maintained single-gear bicycles can be rented
by the hour, day or week in Lucaya at Reef Village and at Running Mon (phone
242/352-6834). If you are planning to put in some heavy mileage, though,
bring your own bike.
Taxis meet every arriving flight and cruise ship, and any hotel will
call one for you, including companies like Freeport Taxi (phone
242/352-6666) and the Grand Bahama Taxi Union (phone 242/352-7101). A
passenger ferry makes a ten-minute trip between Port Lucaya and the Ritz
Bay Resort on Taino Beach (hourly 8am-11pm; US$3 one-way, US$5
round-trip), leaving from the dock behind the Flamingo Bay Hotel at
Taino Beach and the dock at Port Lucaya next to the Ferry House
Restaurant . The ferry is not licensed to carry luggage, so only
day-packs and handbags are permitted.

Freeport/Lucaya and other nearby communities are well connected by a
fleet of privately owned minivan buses. To travel between Freeport and
Lucaya, catch the bus in front of Freeport's International Bazaar or on
the corner of Seahorse Road and Royal Palm Way in Lucaya. Bus stops
throughout the city are marked by pink and white shelters. On busy
routes, the buses leave when they are full and a ride costs a mere
dollar anywhere within the city limits. Buses to settlements east and
west of Freeport/Lucaya leave regularly from the main bus stand in the
parking lot of Winn Dixie Plaza in downtown Freeport.
