"At most museums, the collection is what people come to see. Here the museum itself is the thing." That remark, made by one of the first visitors to the new Getty Center, was echoed by many who came to see this spectacular museum complex after it opened in December, 1997.
Set on a 110-acre hilltop overlooking Los Angeles and the Pacific Ocean, the billion-dollar center is the most expensive art institution ever built in America.
Visitors ride an electric tram up the hill to a large plaza surrounded by gardens. Broad steps lead to the centerpiece of the campus the new headquarters of the Getty Museum.
Artworks previously displayed in the museum's former home, in nearby Malibu, are now showcased in a new building with marble walls and panoramic windows.

Architect Richard Meier designed the museum, which has separate galleries for paintings, decorative arts, medieval manuscripts, sculptures, drawings, and photographs. Five other buildings are set among the gardens, terraces, and natural landscaping of the hilltop. They house the facilities of the Getty Trust, its grant programs, and its institutes for art preservation, art history research, and education. An auditorium and a restaurant complete the complex
