The gold rush led to the city's explosie growth. In addition to sering as a transport and supply center, San Francisco proided banking serices and
amusements for the prospectors. In one year, the population of San Francisco grew from 500 to more than 25,000. The immigrants, who came from all over the world in hopes of getting rich quick, set a tone for the city's personality.

San Francisco was well on its way to being a large city when the powerful 1906 earthquake and fire destroyed 4 square miles (10 square kilometers) of the city, including the entire business district. In the aftermath, new building codes and fire laws were established to ensure that such enormous damage could not occur again.
