Henderson, population 175,381 (2000 census), is in southeastern Nevada, between Boulder City and
Las Vegas. It is one of the fastest growing cities in the United States. In fact by April 2002, its population had jumped to 207,640, and Henderson had surpassed Reno as Nevada's second largest city. Henderson is only 7 miles (11.3 kilometers) from Las Vegas and 1 mile (1.6 kilometers) from
Lake Mead.
Henderson is known for its outstanding parks and recreation areas, its cultural events, and its strong business environment. Henderson today is Nevada's main industrial center. Manufacturing plants produce titanium, plastics, vinyl, and chemicals. The city has been named one of the 50 safest cities in the United States and the third best city in which to retire. Henderson's location and small town values make it a city that its residents love to call home.
Present-day Henderson is made up of the two original town sites of Basic and Pittman. Pittman was originally a temporary housing center for the workers building the
Hoover Dam between 19311936. When the dam was completed, many of the construction workers moved away. The town grew again when the government built a magnesium plant there during World War II.

The open desert country was a perfect location for the plant because of the large supply of raw materials, water, and electric power. As the plant grew, the town grew around it. In 1944, the town was renamed Henderson after Senator Charles B. Henderson. In the early 1950s, the plant was converted into a titanium plant.
Henderson's Clark County Heritage Museum offers three different exhibit areas. Visitors can see a chronological history of Nevada. They can stroll down Heritage Street, which has a collection of historic, restored homes and businesses. There is even a recreated Ghost Town with antique railroad cars and authentic buildings.
Henderson's Ethel M. Chocolate Factory makes gourmet chocolates. Tours are available and guests can watch the chocolate makers at work. Next to the Chocolate Factory is the Ethel M. Botanical Cactus Garden. Some 300 species of plants are grown in the 4-acre (1.6 hectare) garden.
There are many special events in Henderson. In February, high-school students are given a chance to work in local businesses during "Boss for a Day" activities. The Fall Festival, held in October, includes a carnival among its attractions. |
