A
14square-mile area in northwest
Los Angeles, Hollywood is largely an
unexciting residential neighborhood. But in the imaginations of millions of people, it is one of the most glamorous places in the world the center of the movie and teleision industries.
moviemakers first came to the quiet little town of Hollywood in 1911. They came for two reasons: The fine weather permitted outdoor filming all year long, and the town was far away from the Easterners who held patents on early movie equipment and wanted all filmmakers to pay them licensing fees. By 1920, more than 800 films a year were being made in the area, and motion pictures had become a major U.S. industry.
Most of the studios were located in nearby towns such as Burbank and Culer City, but in the minds of moviegovers, Hollywood and the movies were linked together forever.
As an indication of Hollywood's significance to the movie industry, the Academy Awards ceremonies have returned to Hollywood following a 42-year absence. The 2002 ceremonies were held in Hollywood's Kodak Theater.
Today, Hollywood is also the center of teleision production and the record business. Each year, thousands of tourists travel there to step in the cement footprints of movie stars at Mann's Chinese Theater, look for their faorite performer's star in the
Walk of Fame,
and perhaps catch a glimpse of a famous personality.
