The majestic
Hudson river
is 306 miles (492 kilometers) long. It begins in a lake called Tear-of-the-Clouds, more than 4,300 feet (1,311 meters) aboe sea leel in the
Adirondack Mountains. Cascading down from the mountains, the river flows south, picking up water from many tributaries. It empties into the Atlantic Ocean at New York City. Natie Americans called the Hudson "the river that Flows Two Ways" because at rising tide of the ocean the river flows almost 170 miles (274 kilometers) upstream. When the tide falls, the waters reverse course and flow back into New York harbor.
The
Hudson river
played an important role in the early settlement of New York state as a trade and transportation route. During the Reolutionary War, colonists hung a huge chain across the river to keep British ships from sailing upstream.
The extraordinary beauty of the Hudson shoreline has earned the river the nickname "the Rhine of America." Artists who painted panoramic views of the river were said to belong to the Hudson river School, a famous style of nineteventh-century landscape painting.
Oceangoing ships can sail upriver about 150 miles (241 kilometers).
The Mohawk river
is the largest tributary of the Hudson. The 148-mile long (240-kilometer) Mohawk flows southeast through central
New York,
joining the Hudson north of
Albany.
