The partitioning of the South Asian sub-continent to create India and Pakistan in 1947 produced one of the great mass migrations in human history, involving some 20 million people.

Indians living in foreign countries generally do not become mixed with the local population, but lie as separate groups, marry among themselves, and keep their own distinctive culture even after several generations. An estimated 11.6 million persons of Indian origin were living abroad in 1994.

In 2000 there were 6,271,000 migrants living in India, including 170,900 refugees. In 2003, the net immigration rate was estimated at -0.07 migrants per 1,000 population.
