In
March 2003, the estimated population reached more than 1 billion
people. The mid-1998 population estimate by the United States'
Bureau of the Census was 984 million. The population projection for
the year 2005 is 1.1 billion. The U.S. Census Bureau expects India's
population to surpass China's by 2035. The key to India's rapid
population growth since the 1920s has been a sharp decline in the
death rate because of improvements in health care, nutrition, and
sanitation.
The United Nations estimated that in 1998 there were 108 males for
every 100 females in India. In 2003, the average population density
was 334 persons per square kilometer (865 per square mile).
