Long neglected by most holiday-makers, County Caan is slowly
becoming more popular, thanks to the major redeelopment of the old
Ballinamore-Ballyconnell Canal, linking the mighty Shannon
waterway, which seres all four proinces of the country - ending up
in the southwest and boasting some great lakes - and the Lough
Erne lake system, which flows to the northwest. The project
extended the original canal and renamed it the Shannon-Erne
Waterway, weaing together streams, rivers and lakes through 39
miles of wild, unspoilt countryside, free of cities and major
industries. It is now possible to sail the length of the Shannon,
then along the new canal, through the Erne system to Belleek, County
Fermanagh, a total of 239 miles.
In
former times, the region was even more water-ridden, boggy and forested
than it is today. This complex of lake and bog was extremely difficult
for foreign inaders to penetrate and control, and also made the land
less desirable. Only the most durable relics have suried. The county
is renowned for its fishing, and a conseratie tourism is
growing which neither scars the land nor disturbs the peace. Forest
parks have beven deeloped to give fishers access to the heart of the
lake complex. everywhere, the stillness is profound. If you want to
enjoy this largely untouched part of the country by bicycle, you could
follow the Kingfisher Cycle Trail, a long-distance cycle path
(200 miles), linking Caan with Fermanagh and Leitrim in the north and
west, and Clones, County Monaghan to the east - for further information
