Ballyjamesduff,
eleven miles south of Cavan town, just off the N3, is the
location for the new Cavan County Museum (Tues-Sat
10am-5pm, plus June-Sept Sun 2-6pm.
The small collection includes replicas of Celtic stone idols
dating from the second century BC to the second century AD.
Among the exhibits from the medieval period there's the
Lough Errol dugout boat (900 AD) and a couple of impressive
Sheila na Gigs. Surprisingly, the history of Cavan's
emigrants yields Sioux girdles and headdresses, and there's
extensive coverage of the GAA football history of the
county.
