The southwest of the county has glorious sandy beaches, stunning cliff scenery and a couple of popular family holiday resorts. Arguably the best of the resorts is Kilkee , a traditional holiday town full of character, with a superb beach and within easy reach of the spectacular cliff scenery of the Loop Head peninsula.

Kilrush, the only other place of any size, can't compete in terms of setting, but it does offer plenty of opportunities for water sports and boat trips to Scattery Island, with its medieval round tower and monastic ruins. North from Kilkee stretches a varied coastline of inaccessible cliffs interspersed with fine beaches, especially good near Doonbeg and Quilty; north of here lies the village of Milltown Malbay , famous for traditional music. Inland doesn't look so promising. Southwest from Ennis the country flattens out and becomes scrubby and barren: bog, marsh, the odd bit of cotton grass here, the occasional lump of thistles there, with only sporadic pockets of cultivated land. The bald flank of Slieve Callan is to the north and the outline of the Kerry hills to the south across the Shannon.
