Bob Marley Museum
The former home of Jamaica's best-know reggae ambassador,
now a museum of the great man's life, is an essential
Kingston stop-off. Displays include Marley's favorite stage
clothes and a smooth, cinematic biography in the former Tuff
Gong studio.
Devon House
The former home and gardens of Jamaica's first black
millionaire, Devon House offers respite from the rigors of
the city, with breezy lawns for strolling and the
opportunity to sample the island's best ice cream - made on
the spot.
National Gallery
A surprising discovery amid the downtown heat, the National
Museum's collection of works by Caribbean artists is
fabulous, ranging from the dark, brooding paintings of John
Dunkley to the intuitive sculpture of mystic man Mallica "Kapo"
Reynolds.
Downtown tour
Disregard the horror stories and head downtown to get a real
flavor of Kingston life, from haggling at the massive raft
market (best bargains in Jamaica) to scooping up a bargain
at the record shops along Orange Street.
Hellshire Beach
The closest strip of sand to "town", Hellshire is a Kingston
institution. Devotees come as much for the delicious fried
fish and bammy (a local specialty) as for the sparkling
waters. |
Port Royal
Opposite the city at the end of the Palisadoes (the spit of
land that hems in Kingston harbor), former pirates haven
Port Royal retains a salty charm. You can explore the
remains of Nelson's fort, groove away to blasting reggae at
the Sunday street dance, or sample a plate of fish and bammy.
Lime Cay
The ultimate escape from the city, this tiny white-sand key
(reachable by boat from Port Royal) is the hangout for the
city's well-heeled youth each Sunday, when sound systems,
barbecues and makeshift bars set up to cater to the masses.
At other times, you're likely to have the whole island to
yourself
Clubbing
If you're interested in the Jamaican music scene, Kingston
is the place to experience it at its source. From
Asylum in New Kingston and Cactus in Portmore to
the street dances and stage shows at the city's many venues,
nightlife in Jamaica's capital is the real deal.
