As most visitors to Negril are after a beach holiday rather
than sightseeing, there aren't many managed attractions in
the area. But if you fancy getting out of town, there are
attractive options nearby.
For some peaceful beach life, head east out of town along
Norman Manley Boulevard. Just outside Green Island, the
nearest village to Negril, the unspoiled Half Moon Bay
Beach (daily 8am till late; J$80 entrance, redeemable at
the bar; ph 876/957-6467) is full of the paradisiacal charm
that originally brought tourists to Negril.
The wide curve of white sand has no braiding
booths, jet skis or hassle, just a little sea grass and some
small islets; nude bathing is perfectly acceptable and
snorkel equipment cheap.

The restaurant (daily 8am-10pm) serves excellent
chicken, fish and sandwiches. On the way to Half Moon is
Rhodes Hall Plantation (ph 876/957-6333, ), a 550-acre
coconut, banana, plantain and pear farm with two private
beaches - one a shallow, sea-grassy reef beach with a
freshwater mineral spring bubbling under the brine, the
other a more conventional sugar-sanded curve. Volleyball and
football/basketball pitches and a restaurant/bar are
adjacent, but the main draw is horse riding. The
well-kept mounts trot into the hills and along the beach
(US$30-50, depending on length of ride) |
