Chasers Café 29 Barbican Rd. Popular hangout with a decent beer selection. Monday offers karaoke, Tuesday is oldies night, there's disco each Friday night, and sports on TV throughout the week.

Friends on the Deck 51 Hope Rd. Easy-going and central outdoor bar under a mango tree, popular with a friendly, older set. Different snacks on offer each night, and low-key music from a DJ; women get half-price drinks each Thursday between 5pm and 8pm.

Harry's Bar 80 Constant Spring Rd phone876/755-0514. Pretty, laid-back outdoor bar and restaurant set off from the road in gardens. The music mix includes reggae, alternative and rock, but not dancehall; and there's a dance floor and occasional live music.

Peppers 31 Upper Waterloo Rd. Late-opening and permanently popular outdoor bar that pulls in post-work drinkers and then younger clubbers, who come for a snack or to dance to sound-system DJs.

Raquel's 38c Trafalgar Rd. Central and fairly smart, with lots of fish tanks and excellent service; good for a quiet drink or a meal.

Mingles   Courtleigh Hotel, 85 Knutsford Blvd phone876/929-9000. Indoor and outdoor sections of this hotel nightclub are pleasant places for a drink during the week, while the dance floor fills up on Friday and Saturday nights.
