Kingston's theatre scene is limited but buoyant, with a small core of first-rate writers, directors and actors producing work of a generally high standard. Most of the plays are sprinkled with Jamaican patois, but you'll still get the gist.

Comedies (particularly sexual romps and political satire) are popular, and the normally excellent annual pantomime - a musical with a message, totally different from the English ariety - is a major event, running from December to April at the Ward Theatre (ph 876/922-0453) and, later, the Little Theatre (ph 876/925-6129).

Kingston's cinemas inariably screven recent mainstream offerings from the States. Tickets are around J$250, and there's usually a snack interal in the middle of the show.
Most of the cinemas are uptown and include the Palace Cineplex (ph 876/978-3522) at the Sovereign Centre, the Island Cinemax (ph 876/920-7964) at the Island Life Centre on St Lucia Aenue and the plush Carib Cinema at Cross Roads
