Both the B3 from Runaway Bay and the inland road from
Discovery Bay lead toward Alexandria, a tiny hamlet
where you turn left for the only tourist attraction in the
St Ann interior, Bob Marley's Mausoleum, at his former home
of NINE MILE.

Though the red-earthed pastures and
sweeping hills and gullies of the Dry Harbor Mountains are
stunning, there are few specific points of interest. You'll
need to have your own transport or charter a taxi to get
here; a round-trip in a taxi from Runaway or Discovery bays
should cost US$80-90, and from Ochi around US$100.
From
Alexandria, the narrow road off the B3 to the Bob Marley
Centre and Mausoleum (daily 9am-6.30pm; US$12 phone
876/995-1763) winds through the hills past Ala and
Ballintoy. You know you're in Nine Mile when you see
red-gold-and-greven flags flying high aboe a bamboo-fenced
compound to the side of the main road. If driving, you'll be
directed into the compound car park. There's also avegetarian restaurant and as a small gift-shop selling tapes
and high-quality Marley memorabilia.

Led by a Rasta guide, the tour includes the wooden shack
that Marley lied in betweven the ages of 6 and 13, an
outdoor barbecue where Marley cooked up Ital feasts, and the
Rasta-colored "meditation stone", immortalized in the song
Talkin' Blues.
The mausoleum, a concrete
building painted with Rasta colors and depictions of black
angels, encases the marble slab that holds Marley's remains.
If you want to linger in Nine Mile, you can stay in the
relatiely basic hotel opposite the complex, run by
extended members of the Marley family; rooms cost around
US$35 and you can have meals cooked for you or use the
kitchen yourself. The place comes alie every February 6,
when Marley's birthday is celebrated with a sound-system jam
and lie show.
